Why Third Parties Struggle in the US (Video) – And Why We the Center Majority are Stronger as a Coalition than as a Third Party

YouTube Video by TLDR News

Starting at 8.15, this Video explains the principal reasons why Third Parties have not been able to succeed in U.S.:

  1. Usurpation of 3rd Party Platforms by the Two Major Parties. The two Major Parties have a history of usurping the platforms/ policies of any significant 3rd parties, making the potential Third Parties essentially superfluous and doomed not to survive. Why vote for the 3rd Party candidate, when you can achieve those same policies by voting for a Major Party candidate who stands a chance of winning?   and, most importantly:
  2. The “Winner Takes All” Electoral System in U.S. All States but Nebraska and Main award all Electoral Votes on the basis of Winner Takes All. This effectively makes it impossible for a 3rd Party to gain any Electoral Votes, and in effect makes the 3rd Party Candidate always a “spoiler” in a Presidential Election. As explained rather succinctly in one of the comments following the video:
“’Winner take[s] all.’ Mathematically and logically, in such a system you MUST converge to 2 parties…. It [has] been demonstrated scientifically (via both direct proofs and simulations) that you always converge to 2 dominant parties due to the spoiler effect, that is that if you vote for a third party [in a “Winner Takes All” election], you end up causing the closer of the two major parties to your ideology to lose. So if you don’t want the closer of the two major parties to lose, you have to bite the bullet and vote lesser of the two evils or you are effectively voting against your own interests.[Emphasis supplied]

People generally shy away from voting for a third party candidate, not wanting to “throw their vote away” or, worst case, help the major party candidate they favor least to win.

Thus, our Center-Majority-endorsed candidates will have a more realistic chance of actually winning, if they run within one of the two major parties, and we come together to vote for them, regardless of party.

We would add that, in the “Winner Takes All” – “Plurality of the Vote Wins” Electoral System that now prevails in nearly all States of the United States, the candidate with the most votes wins, even if less than a majority. When there are candidates from more than two Parties running in a general election, the vote will be divided among them, and the winning candidate could very likely win with less than 30% of the Vote! That would mean effectively, Minority Rule, where the will of the Majority could be thwarted.

All of these reasons help to explain why we the Center Majority of America do not seek to become a Third Party, but rather a Coalition of like-minded Center Independents, Republicans, and Democrats.

Together, as a Coalition, we now hold a Majority of all Votes in the U.S.   In a two-party system, since we include members of both Major Parties, we have a chance of influencing who become Candidates in both Parties — through the Programs & Initiatives we organize.

In addition, in “Winner Takes All” general elections with only two Major Parties, if we vote together for the Candidate who will support and enact our policies, regardless of Party, we have the Power to determine the outcomes, and assure a Government Of the People, By the People and For the People, where the will of a true Majority of the People prevails.   Read more about the process through which we agree upon which candidates are endorsed by our Center Majority Coalition of America (CMC America) »

In this way, eventually we have the Power to cause both Parties to reform in the direction of better serving our Platform and Principles, and thereby better supporting the Middle Class, strengthening America, and bringing our Country Together again!
